While anxiety can be a normal part of life but when it is a persistent problem and never goes away, then it becomes a serious issue. Anxiety and panic disorders can be debilitating conditions that impact daily activities, work and relationships. There are several different types of anxiety disorders and each one should not be taken lightly. Thankfully, these disorders are met with great success through a variety of anxiety treatment methods.

Types and their Symptoms

Generalized Anxiety Disorder – individuals will display excessive anxiety or worry for months and suffer from several anxiety-related symptoms.

  • Restlessness
  • Easily fatigued
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Difficulty controlling the worry
  • Sleep issues

Panic Disorder – individuals suffer from recurrent and unexpected panic attacks. These attacks include intense fear, heart palpitations, sweating, shortness of breath and/or a feeling of impending doom. Other symptoms may also be present during such attacks

  • Intense worries when next attack will occur

Social Anxiety Disorder – sometimes referred to as “social phobia”, individuals have a marked fear of social or performance situations in which they expect to feel embarrassed, judged, rejected or fearful of offending others.

  • Feeling anxious around other people
  • Difficulty talking to people
  • Feeling very self-conscious
  • Worried about feeling humiliated, embarrassed or rejected
  • Worried about being judged
  • Worrying for days or weeks before an event takes place
  • Avoiding social situations
  • Hard time making friends
  • Blushing, sweating or trembling around other people
  • Feeling nauseous when other people are around

Risk Factors – these factors have been found to increase the risk of suffering from an anxiety disorder at some point in life.

  • Shyness in childhood
  • Being female
  • Having few economic resources
  • Being divorced or widowed
  • Stressful life events
  • Anxiety disorders in close relatives
  • Parental history of mental conditions
Anxiety Disorder Treatment

The first step to treating anxiety disorders is a proper diagnosis. A primary care provider should provide an initial evaluation that can rule out other physical health conditions (overactive thyroid or low blood sugar) or side effects of diet or medications. A thorough mental health evaluation is also recommended because often times anxiety disorders coexist with other related conditions. Treatment for anxiety disorders usually includes psychotherapy, medication or both.
